STORY OF A BEAR FINDING BALANCE BETWEEN ART & BUSINESS
A new year, new music and a renewed commitment to the pursuit of a passionate life. We’re on the brink of our debut full length album release, beginning with our first single Battle Of Me. As the title suggests it’s a song written from an internal struggle. One this Bear has constantly with pursuing a career in music. It’s like being in a volatile marriage, ripe with pure bliss and utter frustration. There’s a reality to be faced when choosing music as a means to consistent financial stability.
Love for artistic expression vibrates in every cell of my body and cuts to the core of my being. My desire for it to be constant in my life, is what keeps me driven to succeed. That being said it can also be a consistent monthly struggle to justify such a course.
SO WHY DO IT?
I tell myself many reasons, one being the heartfelt connection created and shared with others through song. Experiencing after a show, someone’s willingness to share their heartfelt story from a deeply tender place, is a priceless gift. It’s a profound honour, to hear how a song of ours, can make a person feel closer to someone they cherish, feel like they’re not alone in this life or just make them feel super awesome. These experience's may not always pay the bills but they sure do fill my heart with an immeasurable amount of wealth.
It’s also a blessing to have the opportunity to visit so many parts of this world we walk upon. Just last year we went to the Maritimes, Nashville, Spokane and L.A., all places I’ve never seen before. On top of it so many of the cities & towns we’ve visited through the years, are now rich with a family like network of friendly souls to see and catch up with. It can make being away from home doable.
Also, let’s face it, its just plain BAD ASS to giver on stage night after night with two of my best friends. Three beards, three part harmony and three hearts banded together. Bound by a mutual, undefinable force to play music and to share what we create with anyone willing to experience it.
USE THE FORCE!
Which brings me to the main reason why I pursue music and it’s one you can’t put down in words. There is no cognitive way to comprehend the magical energy that exists in people, the energy that fuels our need to create and connect. You can attribute your nature, your personality to a long list of experiences from childhood to now and you can make a meaning out of that knowledge.
My belief is, there is something celestial that happens in that sacred place of creation. An ethereal force takes over when finding words, melody and harmonic chords to lift it up. It usually starts with a predominant experience, thought or emotion, that begs to be expressed and realized. It was that exact experience for BATTLE OF ME, something forced my will to make space to bring the song into the light. At the time, maybe I should've been focused on ways to make it through the month, ways to justify my career in music or looking for another vocation. The song trumped all of those choices. Creative expression is a force that lives within us all. It can be muted by the tribulations of life and we can only convince ourselves to go without it for so long. For those of us who have experienced the sweet rapture of artistic freedom, we know its like having a hit of the sweetest drug, one taste and your hooked.
So now I sit here three years later in the studio that I built, in Nanaimo BC, writing this blog. I’m writing to celebrate the evolution and story of just one song from our new album. Every song has a story to be shared. My wife is inside, putting our little one to bed and will then get back to constructing our business plan for the photography endeavour we are embarking upon…until inevitably the munchkin wakes. The choices we make from and for our hearts, are the examples we want to give our little one. To show that it’s worth fighting for what brings you the most joy in this life. Because no matter what road you go down hardship and woe awaits, it can be a frightful path. Fear is the voice of your true calling, your wants, wishes and desires. So I’m gonna continue to sit here and happily work until the wee hours of morn, because that’s the power of desire, the power of creation and the power of ROCK ’n’ ROLL!
